No More Fear : Sexual Assault and the Four 'C'S' of Rape Avoidance
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (June, 1993)
Author: Stephen M. Thompson
Average review score:

New Thoughts About Sexual Assault Prevention
After reading this book for the third time in doing a sexual assault prevention presentation for local high school students, I am amazed at the common sense nature of the preventive measures Thompson suggests. This is not your usual "Women Protecting Themselves" speech; it is a collection of everyday, every location, every person suggestions to help women protect themselves and avoid getting into a dangerous situation in the first place. Thompson's 4 "C"s are easy to remember and make sense. Every parent of every teenage or college age girl should read this book and share it with their daughters...and daughters should share it with their mothers. Sexual assault knows no age; this book will help prevent it.

Notebooks of Major Thompson
Published in Paperback by Atheneum (March, 1982)
Author: Pierre Daninos
Average review score:

Dry Wit Double Filtered
Major Thompson is a rather stuffy Englishman who, because he is married to a French woman, makes his home in France. If you would like a mental picture of Major Thompson, just picture Nigel Bruce's Dr. Watson in the many Sherlock Holmes films. A bit pompous, a bit of a stuffed shirt, well meaning, and above all, "veddy, veddy" proper as only an Englishman can be. That's our Major Thompson.

But wait a minute, there's something wrong with this picture. Oh, I know what it is; this book, written in the first person (i.e. in the voice of Major Thompson) is really written by a Frenchman! So what we really have is a Frenchman, disguised as an Englishman, commenting on the foibles of the French and along the way, making "inadvertant" fun of the English.

THE NOTEBOOKS OF MAJOR THOMPSON does not have a plot in the traditionsl sense of the meaning of plot. It is a series of observations purportedly from the notebooks of the title.

A few observations from the book will show how successfully Danino, in his English persona, has skewered both cultures:

"A Frenchman without a mistress is like an Englishman without a club."

"When an Englishman passes a pretty woman in the street, he sees her without looking at her . . . .When a Frenchman passes a pretty woman in the street, he first looks at her legs . . . . then turns to have a better view, and eventually realizes he is going in the same direction as she is.

And much more of the same.

There is a chapter devoted to the problems involved in educating his half English, half French son. The Major wants him to have a "proper English education," and his wife, of course, wants a traditional French upbringing. This leads to sending him alternately to an English Boarding School and a French one. He gets totally contradictory views on every French/English conflict in history as well as Napoleon, Wellington, Joan of Arc, etc. Additionally, there is an attempt to have him taught in France by a live-in English woman named Miss ffyfe (with two lower case f's) who could have doubled as a drill sergeant in a very tough army training camp. This proves totally unsatisfactory. Finally a compromise is reached and the boy is sent to a Swiss boarding school.

All this is written utilizing dry English wit filtered first through the French author, Daninos, then through his English creation, Major Thompson.

This is not a book that will appeal to the reader who searches for extreme violence and/or sexual innuendos on every page. It is for the reader who appreciates subtlety and understated humor. I guess that I fall into this latter category because I really enjoyed the book.

Number Rhymes (Little Barron's Toddler Books)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Juveniles (February, 1999)
Author: Carol Thompson

One-Two Read!
My 10 month old son loves this book! It has bright pictures that capture his attention and action rhymes he tries to imitate. Preschoolers also really seem to like this book. My son's older cousins and the preschool class I teach ask me to read it over and over. My preschoolers can say the rhymes and do the actions without the book now, but they still like to look at the pictures! The other Little Barron's books are really cute too!

Odin's Daughter
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (December, 2001)
Author: Dawn Thompson

Odin's Daughter, by Dawn Thompson
I read Historicals almost exclusively, but they have to be good Historicals, well researched, and correct. This one delivers. It takes place at the end of the eighth century, and follows the journey of Corbin, a young monk from the isle of Iona, who liberates a 10-year-old slave child, Mai, of Celt and Norse heritage, from bondage in Scotland with intent to return her to her homeland. When the girl grows to young womanhood, it is discovered that she was taken from her home in Ireland, and the monk sets out to return her there. What ensues is an edge-of-your-seat adventure, replete with challenges to surmount on four shores, not the least of which are shipwreck, seduction, betrayal, and Viking raiders. A real page-turner.

Descriptions abound--not only of the locales, but of the costumes, and props, modes of travel, the mechanics of battles and raids, all woven skillfully into the story in such a way that I felt I had been transported back to this fascinating era. I learned so much without feeling that I had just been subjected to a history lesson.

The author's style is lyrical, and very easy to read, with a good deal of dialogue that captures the flavor of the times without making the reader struggle with dialects. The characters sparkle. They are alive. I will never forget them. That's importnt to me when I read a book. Memorable characters, like those of Mary Stewart, Anya Seton, and those who walk off the pages of Odin's Daughter never die.

This is a book for anyone who loves a good adventure spiced with romance. It is no means just a woman's book. My husband enjoyed it just as much as I did. I understand there is a sequel coming soon. I intend to be first in line.

On the Door: The Continuing Adventures of a Nightclub Bouncer
Published in Hardcover by Summersdale Publishers (September, 1998)
Author: Geoff Thompson
Average review score:

Awesome.
Anyone who has worked the door knows that this man knows his stuff. Mr Thompson aka. Geoff, writes honestly and holds little back from the reader so it certainly is not a book if your idea of a Saturday night is watching "the late show" with a bowl of chips and a coke. This book like Geoff's others is an exceptional read and I couldn't put it down (reading three of his books in two days). For anyone who works the door read this book,as you will relate to his insight, his "study" of this profession through immense experience. Thank god we don't all encounter the level of violence he had. If you don't work the door but always wanted to be a doorman and go around telling us how we have the greatest job, Geoff's book is for you, to set you straight. This book pulls no punches (pun intended)...great read.
